Cars for sale!!
Buyer Beware!!
UK / European based cars are notorious for suffering rust and previous repairs. Although required to have regular MOT inspections these are not necessarily done to a standard that you might consider.
Recently one of our customers completed his own search and purchased a 2000 Mini Cooper from a well known Mini specialist in the UK. The car, offered at GBP 12,995, was listed in the ad with such statements as:
“This car has truly been cared for over the years which really shows in its condition”
“The underside is in very good condition with no nasty welding or black underseal to hide rust/rot”
Distance pics on arrival seemed to show a pretty clean car.
Sadly a lift on the hoist revealed all sorts of corrosion with extensive rust in structural areas and thick black underseal sprayed to cover all manor of horrors…..
The RAWS/SEVS regulations are very clear when it comes to damage and/or corrosion and the sad reality is this car can only be scrapped or re-exported.
Cars in Japan are far less likely to have rust especially those from the Tokyo and Nagoya areas. Our “Mini man” in Japan is Aaron at Bulldog Bros and he goes right over all the cars to ensure we will have no issues here.
Below are some pics he sends us of a typical Mini going through the auctions. This car was a 1997 model and had covered 80,000 km from new. As you can see the sills and floor are very good and this car represents the majority of cars that we get coming from Japan.
Safety First!!
Due to additional automotive safety standards in Europe and Japan, the MY97 Rover Mini came with all sorts of additional features including Side Intrusion Bars, Pre-tensioned Front Seat Belts and Drivers Side SRS Airbag. The bodyshell was upgraded and additional bracing and supports fitted and these cars were the safest Classic Mini every made.
Interestingly the SRS system was fully “stand alone” and not dependent on any other part of the car. Some components were shared between other vehicles from the “Rover” stables including the MGF. The SRS sensor was unique and calibrated especially to suit the Mini.
To enable continued sales in Japan a test vehicle completed the crash test to suit the Japanese Safety Standard TRIAS47 which was acceptable alternative to the Australian Design Rule ADR69. This was a remarkable feat and a credit to all the engineers involved as passing this regulation ensured the Mini would continue in production until the end of 2000.
Mini Side Intrusion Bars
With the introduction of the MY97 Rover Mini in late 1996 came many safety upgrades including Side Intrusion Bars in the doors. When we first gained compliance for the Mini back in 1997 we were required to crash test the car to ensure they meet the requirements of the Australian Design Rule (ADR) 29.
They didn’t!!
This meant a rethink was required with a side intrusion bar that could be retro fitted into the door without requiring any major modifications.
As you can imagine room in the door is very tight and the bar had to satisfy the safety requirements as well as allowing the window and door lock to operate correctly.
In the end a custom bar was designed that could be retro fitted and meet the requirements of ARD29.
With the new bar fitted the official crash test for ADR29 was completed and this time it passed with flying colours.
